How in-house calibration helped Silkeborg Varme improve safety, flexibility, and reduce costs

Danish heat and power producer Silkeborg Varme decided to bring the calibration of its most critical safety system measurement points in-house. Previously, this work was performed by an external calibration provider. After implementing the Beamex MC6 calibrator and CMX Calibration Management Software, the company started managing calibrations internally.

At the Silkeborg combined heat and power plant, there are around 35 critical test points, each with three sensors. In total, this represents approximately 110 independent calibrations that are essential for safe boiler operation. If one sensor gives an incorrect reading, the system triggers an alarm. If two sensors deviate, the boilers shut down automatically.

By implementing the Beamex solution, Silkeborg Varme gained significantly more flexibility. Calibrations no longer need to be carried out only during the annual inspection. Instead, they can be scheduled when it best fits daily operations and priorities. The Beamex software automatically notifies the team when calibration is due, while test points are color-coded according to their status: completed, upcoming, or overdue.

One of the most important outcomes was improved safety. Using Beamex equipment, the team identified incorrect settings in six sensors within the critical safety system — issues that had previously been missed by external suppliers. This showed that managing calibration internally gives the plant a better understanding of the full system and helps detect potential risks earlier.

The digital calibration process also reduced the risk of human error. Instead of recording values on paper and later transferring them to Excel, calibration data is stored automatically in the system. This improves documentation accuracy, data quality, and makes it easier to generate calibration certificates.

The financial benefit was also clear. The investment in the Beamex solution paid for itself in approximately one year. In addition, the company gained the ability to perform more calibrations without additional external service costs.
